The area was fairly rural right up until the late nineteenth century when a few of the land owners succumb to the plans of developers. The name Raynes Park gets its name from the original major landowner of the area, the Rayne Family.
The biggest development was done by Richard Garth who was the Lord of the Manor and he also managed to persuade the railway company to build a station. Sadly though development was slow due to his absence from the project as Chief Justice of Bengal and much of the land original set aside for development became a golf course and cricket ground.
The more the expensive areas of Copse Hill and Coombe with their large detached houses, golf courses and gated lands are situated toward the north and west of Raynes Park.
The Raynes Park Station has two distinctive features. The footbridge is unusually long in spanning all four main railway lines at a 45 degree angle and that the platforms themselves are not opposite each other.
The famous Actor Oliver Reed grew up in Raynes Park in the 1940s though actually born in neighbouring Wimbeldon. He was know to frequently retail stores of his youth in Raynes. His career didn’t really take off until he had served in the Royal Medical Corps and began working in films in the late 1950s. After living in Guernsey as a tax exile he eventually settled far away from Raynes Park in The Republic of Ireland with his wife Josephine Burge.
As an actor his success was particularly incredible due to the fact that he had not formal acting training or theatrical experience. He performed in a huge range of films from comedy to horror to drama to thriller. His final role was as a slave dealer in Gladiator in which he played alongside Richard Harris. Unfortunately due to his untimely death extra footage had to be done digitally mixed using outtake footage.
The area has a semi-professional football club, Raynes Park Vale F.C. It was established in 1995 and they joined the Combined Counties Football League and currently play in the league’s Premier Division.
Apart from a few local shops the nearest shopping centre of any substance is Wimbledon.
